The C.E. Byrd Lady Jackets ended their indoor track season with great success. They produced the best team effort by any C.E. Byrd girls team ever at the 2017 LHSAA Division 1 Indoor State Championship track meet last Saturday on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. The Lady Jackets placed a team record high of 5th place and set a new team-high total points record with 30 points. In the process they also set 3 PRs, 3 school records, 4 Louisiana Top-5 rankings, and a US#14 ranking.
Senior Kyah Loyd led the way as she provided 21.5 of the 30 points. Loyd became a state champion twice Saturday evening by winning two events including defending her 60m hurdles title in 8.82. She also won the 60m dash state title, her 4th career state title, in a close race against her south LA rival and two-time defending state champ. The 60m dash time was 7.53, a new PR, a school record, and the fastest 60m time in the state for 2017 which ranks 5th on the Louisiana All-time list. Loyd also ran on the 4x400 relay team.
Freshman Kayla Harrison scored 5.5 points as she placed 4th in the 400m matching her week old PR and school record of 58.57. Harrison ran on the 4x400 relay team as well.
Sophomore Aleceya Harrison and senior Destiny Jones each scored 1.5 points as they both ran on the 4x400m relay which placed 3rd setting a new school record of 4:06.83, exactly 2 seconds better than the former record set in 2014 featuring former Lady Jacket state champs Caroline Campbell and Morgan White. Kyah Loyd's 56.7 second come-from-behind anchor leg highlighted that relay race to end the evening.
