State Champions! Last Saturday evening at LSU in Baton Rouge, the C.E. Byrd Lady Jackets track team won their first ever state championship title in dominant fashion. The Lady Jackets scored a team high of 74 points to win 19 points ahead of runner-up and three-time defending champ Zachary. The Lady Jackets were in 8 events and brought home medals in every single event including two medals in one event, the 300m Hurdles. They earned 4 golds, 2 silver, and 3 bronze. The team was led once again by senior Kyah Loyd. Loyd who was performing in her final track meet as a Yellow Jacket put together her best meet of her life and so did her teammates. She won all three of her individual events in outstanding times. She won the 100m (11.70), 100m Hurdles (13.75 Composite and Class 5A Record), and 200m (23.70). She also ran on the 4x100 relay that set a school record again in 47.16, the 4th fastest time in Louisiana history. The relay team placed 2nd giving Loyd a total of 32 points, a new team record high. Freshman Kayla Harrison won the 300m Hurdles in a state leading PR time of 44.24 and her teammate sophomore Taisheka Porchia placed 2nd in a PR 45.37. Porchia also placed 3rd in the Triple Jump as she leaped to 38' 6.25". The 3 relays combined scored 20 points as the 4x200 and 4x400 placed third in impressive times, 1:41.76, a season best and #2 Byrd all-time and 3:57.05 also the #2 Byrd all-time. Also Sophomore Allen England made the best of his second consecutive trip to the state meet by running a 1600m PR 4:30.95.
