Byrd Writers Rocked Artbreak Literature Writing Competition! The following students won awards: Caleigh Dawson for Literary High Poetry: Rhyming; Kalyln Dupont for Literary High Prose: Descriptive; Keiser Dallas for Literary High Prose: Humorous; and Gracie Gracie Gotberg, Ceara Johnson, Anna Clair Mackey, and Emily Langley for Literary Jurors' Choice Awards. And last, but not least, the winner of the most prestigious writing award possible at Artbreak is Tyler Spivey who won the Literary High School Literary Portfolio Award. Congratulations to you all!
Congratulations to Byrd wrestlers Cameron Vaughns finishing 6th and Demetri Teddlie nd in the Adidas USA wrestling tournament in Missouri last week. They are now 11th grade all American. Also congrats to the Shreveport Times all regional recipients: Logan Lewis and Lee Bledsoe - honorable mention; J. W. Fuller and Cameron Vaughns 2nd team; and Demetri Teddlie, Jacob Blaze Yawn, and Bailee Creasey who finished 1st team all regional. Byrd finished the season with 11 all city, 3 first team all regional, and 3 all state wrestlers.
Best of luck to the tennis team who are playing in the regional tennis tournament next Monday and Tuesday. They are Von Klotzbacj, Levi Holley, William Sanders, David Chu, William Raney, Connor Regard, Carter Culverhouse, Dalton Dayries, Evelyn Gaines, Abigail Schmidt, Ellis Bryan, Emme Cehajic, Josefina Simoncini, Emma Turner, Riley Noble, and Holly Dorsett. Congratulations to our Track & Field team! Last Friday at the Hoss Garrett Relays in Ruston, LA the Byrd T&F teams earned 15 medals (3 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze), 12 season bests, 6 PRs, 1 SCHOOL RECORD, and a Louisiana #2 ranking in the boys 4x400 relay. The gold medalists include senior Avaunte Steward as he won the 400m dash in a HUGE personal best with a LA 5A #7 49.57 effort, the fastest time at Byrd since former state champ Albert Fullwood in 2005. The boys Distance Medley Relay (Trent Wells, Donavon Jackson, LaDann Thomas, Allen England) also won gold as they ran the 2nd best time in the state 10:50:15, they also own this year's #1 time 10:46.43 which ranks #5 All-time in Louisiana. The girls DMR also won gold (Kayleigh Kammer, Becca Brown, Miranda Milner, Bryn Peters). Another highlight was the boys 4x400 Relay (Avaunte Steward, LaDann Thomas, Jaylon Adams, Donavon Jackson) who ran the 2nd fastest time in the state and a SCHOOL RECORD in 3:21.70!!! Mairead Smith (13.5), Jonnai Jones (12), Bryn Peters (9.5), and Becca Brown (8) were our top girls' team scorers. Auvante Steward (14), Trent Wells (9.5), Jonathan Plaza (8), Donavon Jackson (6.5), and LaDann Thomas (6.5) were our top boys' scorers.
Congratulations to Kylie Davis for placing 3rd in the Adidas National Wrestling Tournament in Independence, Missouri. By finishing in the top eight, she is now an All American finisher.
Congratulations to 5 of our Byrd wrestlers who competed in the USA Wrestling Louisiana state championships during spring break! Cameron Vaughns finished 3rd at the 160lb division and Logan Lewis finished 3rd at 180lbs. JW Fuller dominated the 106 lb division winning his first state championship. Demetri Teddlie defended his 132lb win last year and placed first this year at 138lbs. Jacob Blaze Yawn received his second state title after sharing it last year at 138lbs, weighed in this year at 150lbs but wrestled up two weight classes and winning the 170lb division championship!
