NATIONAL BETA 2019 Scholarship Semifinalists – Congratulations to our semifinalists! Your outstanding achievements have brought you to the final stages of the selection process. The candidates below were named semifinalists in the National Beta Scholarship Program. Two hundred and forty-seven of these students will be named Beta Scholars and receive a scholarship of no less than $1,000. Five will receive a $20,000, $15,000, $10,000, $8,000 or $6,000 award. We have two of the three students from this area - Hannah Berry and Hailey Bryant.

Congratulations to Byrd’s Quiz Bowl team, who placed 1st at the HL Bourgeois NAQT tournament last Saturday in Houma, LA. The team was captain Tyler Spivey, Cade Crandall, Von Klotzbach, and Wyatt McCrary. Next month the team including Dylan Tynes will be traveling to the state competition. The C.E. Byrd Indoor track teams finished the indoor season Saturday evening at LSU's Carl Maddox Fieldhouse in Baton Rouge. By the end of the meet the BYRD T&F athletes claimed one event STATE CHAMP title, two PRs, one SCHOOL RECORD. The highlight for the Yellow Jackets was senior LaDann Thomas winning the 800m state title in a HUGE indoor PR 1:57.93. It's his second state title as he won the outdoor 5A 800m in May 2018. Senior Mairead Smith also scored a PR in 9.78 in the 60m Hurdles in only her third attempt ever. Other Yellow Jacket top-ten finishers at the state meet include Allen England (1600m and 3200m), Boys 4x400 and 4x200 relay (Avaunte Steward, Donavon Jackson, Jaylon Adams, LaDann Thomas), Jonnai Jones (High Jump and Shot Put), Avaunte Steward (400m), and Donavon Jackson (400m).
The C.E. Byrd girls and boys indoor track teams will compete at the LHSAA Indoor state championships in Baton Rouge this weekend. Both teams combined make Byrd’s largest contingency ever at the annual indoor state meet. The boys team qualified in 7 events and the girls qualified in 5 events. 12 total events is the most of any North Louisiana school this year. Congratulations to the students who attended Model United Nations in Baton Rouge. Von Klotzbach, Tyler Spivey, Emily Clarke, Cade Crandall, Brooks Belanger, and Ceara Johnson all had resolutions passed while representing their countries of India, Norway, and Kazakhstan. Porter May and Robert Lawrence were excellent leaders as returning conference veterans. Great job Youth and Gov!
