The Byrd Golf Boys brought home the 2019 Div 1 State Championship April 29-30 in Lafayette. The boys ended round one 15 strokes from the lead to come back and win by 5 strokes for a total 20 stroke comeback! Congratulations!! Competing were Senior Hayes Hubble, Juniors Payne Johnson, Porter May and Jake Marler and Freshman Peyton Johnson. Marler was a third place individual medalist. History was made in Lafayette when the girls golf team brought home their first-ever Division 1 State Championship! Competing were Seniors Gillian Cole and Alexis Lee and Freshman Sydney Moss. Gillian Cole tied for a third place medal.
The Byrd Track & Field boys team placed 3rd at the Region 1-5A Championships at NSU last Friday scoring 48 points, the most points scored at Regionals since 2012! The boys team earned 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals, 6 season bests, 5 PRs, and 1 SCHOOL RECORD. The girls team earned 5 season bests and 1 PR. Senior co-captain Allen England led the way with 16 points by winning the Region 1-5A 1600m in a huge PR 4:24.75. That time ranks #3 in Louisiana. That's his third career sub-4:30 and second title in a row as he won the District 1-5A 1600m the week before. Allen also placed 3rd in the 3200m in a season best 10:06.56. Freshman Trent Wells placed 2nd in the 1600m in a HUGE PR as well. His 4:26.60 ranks #4 in the state, #1 for freshman statewide. Our other senior co-captain and 2-time state champion LaDann Thomas placed 2nd in the 800m in 1:58.26, his only loss of the year. LaDann ranks #2 in the state in his specialty and will attempt to defend his title next Saturday at the LHSAA State Meet in Baton Rouge. The boys 4x400 Relay set a bigtime SCHOOL RECORD of 3:18.68. Members include Avaunte Steward, LaDann Thomas, Jaylon Adams, and Donavon Jackson. That performance ranks our quartet at #2 statewide. Other PRs and highlights from the Regional meet were Trayvious Johns (SP 42-3.5, Discus 129-6), Jonathan Plaza (Javelin 152-10), Boys 4x200 1:29.37 (Kyree Buck, Avaunte Steward, Jaylon Adams, Donavon Jackson), Mairead Smith (100h 16.69), Caitlin Byrd (86-10 Discus) Claire White (800m 2:30.09), and girls 4x200 1:47.37 (Becca Brown, Alissa Lane, Cyntericka Gatson, Foluwa Desalu).
